My Pretty Valentine!
No sooner have we popped the Christmas decorations back in the cupboard than we are confronted with pink and red hearts festooned around shopping malls.
14 February is the time to declare your undying love for your nearest and dearest beloveds by offering a gift signifying heartfelt passion.
Well this year why not make the gesture a grand one, escape for a long weekend’s break to the sea, the desert, the bush, the mountains or shop up a storm and go clubbing in Joeys, Cape Town, Durban, Maputo, Windhoek, Swakop, Stonetown, in fact the list of city breaks is worth considering if you are more of a party animal.
But the true romantic is likely to seek serenity in the African bush or on a white sandy beach, the ubiquitous palm trees swaying in the breeze and a twinkling azure blue sea with that deliciously exotic fragrance of the ocean hanging heavily in the air. Oh yes! Zanzibar, Ile St Marie or Lamu loom large in my imagination it is soon time to get back and glimpse just a smidgen of island life.
Take a look at our weekender and short break specials for some sweet inspiration.

New York! New York! As many a legendary artist has sung in honour of this vibrant, fast paced, energetic city that never sleeps. If you haven’t been there then put it high on your list of travel to do’s, the memory of the visit will stay with you forever. Combine a short stay in New York with a trip to Disney World or a couple of nights in Washington where you might get to spot the President – don’t we all want to be Obama’d?
Cruising has always appealed to me so I jumped at the invitation to have lunch on board Peter Deilmann’s elegantly grand ship the MS Deutschland when it was docked in Cape Town harbour recently. The lunch was stylish, supreme cuisine served by refined ships stewards reminiscent of the grand old days of cruise ships, where men dressed for dinner and the ladies arrived bejeweled and elegantly draped for the captain’s cocktail party! MS Deutschland is state-of-the-art cruising, with the latest technology the digital age has to offer but its fifties style, harping back to that evocative era of Noel Coward, Frank Sinatra, Ella and Louis Armstrong!
The cruise that whets my appetite is the July 2009 12-night cruise in the Baltics, visiting Russia, St Petersburg, Stockholm, Helsinki and Copenhagen, click here for more info on her cruising itineraries for 2009.
Well that is it folks – short and sweet for the shortest month of the year. Brace yourselves for the unexpected and keep smiling through the dark fiscal clouds ahead!
